Slade buy promising NZ galloper to head
to cups
Ever wanted a Cups horse? Want
one heading there in 2008?
Introducing
RED SQUARE
4yo chestnut gelding
(by Danske from Albert on Star)
We approached a leading NZ bloodstock agent to find us a potential
staying type to be brought to Australia & he highly recommended this
horse, Lee Freedman & ourselves reviewed his record & footage of his
runs, he vetted fine, he’ll so on be heading here to be trained by
Lee with the major Spring staying races in mind.
We tried to buy The Fuzz last year in
the same fashion but were outbid …our man in NZ doesn’t rate The
Fuzz anywhere near RED SQUARE. He’s lightly raced having on ly
10 starts, 3 wins, 3 thirds & yet to go bey on d 1600 metres but
he’ll stay all day.
Former trainer Lance O’Sullivan wasn’t keen to part with him and
said to me he has ‘untapped’ ability, has taken his time with the
horse & was about to embark on a staying preparation with him. He
said he’s reeled off some terrific sectionals in his work & going to
a top trainer such as Lee with his facility will see the horse reach
his full potential.
He’s a proven galloper with an exciting future

Three Slade winners in one day!
16/01/2008
As anyone
in racing knows it's hard to win a race anywhere let alone in town.
So it was a great achievement when not one but three Slade
syndicated horses were successful in the metropolitan area on
Wednesday January 16.
First cab off the rank was Falvelon
filly Spring Drinks who scored a well deserved win in the MRC Indian
Summer Handicap over the 1400 metre Sandown-Lakeside course.
The Freedman trained filly looked all
over a winner when jockey Corey Brown went for home mid-way down the
Sandown straight but had to pull out all stops to hold out
stablemate Shimasani in the drive to the wire.
She
prevailed by a short half head but nevertheless was due all credit
after Corey Brown declared the ride "the best worst ride ever".
Carrying 57.5 kg Spring Drinks was caught three deep and Brown was
forced to roll forward and race on the lead.
"It was a pretty
good effort," Brown said. "Considering how she raced and had to do
it at both ends and the weight."
5YO Spectrum
mare Anais completed a Sandown double for Slade when she scored what
was her second consecutive win in the Not A Single Doubt Handicap
(1200m).
The mare looked
in magnificent order as she pounced on leader Kioni and drew away
for an easy 1 & 3/4 length win over that horse with a further 2
lengths back to Call Me Syd in third.
Splitting the
Sandown pair was Pins 3YO Lapel who scored a stylish win in the
Tooheys New Handicap over 1050 metres at Morphettville.
The win was the second for Lapel who is building an enviable record
(2 wins and 2 thirds from five starts) under Adelaide trainer
Richard Jolly.

City
Success for Sandton
23/11/2007
Lightly raced three-year-old Sandton
made a stylish graduation to city class when successful in the
Stardex Insurance Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday
night.
Punters forgave the filly her last
start Flemington fourth when favourite and sent her out at an odds
on quote.
She did not disappoint, box seating
on the fence in third before easing out and strolling three wide to
the front.
Her winning run saved jockey Corey
Brown from a fate worse than death.
"Lee said to me
- whatever you do don't be third on the fence with this rail out so
far," Brown said.
"I could feel
his (Freedman's) hands around my throat at the half mile."
The result was
never in doubt once Brown extricated Sandton from the rails and the
pair cleared out to score a two and a quarter length win over Apple
Crumble, with Hushabye Baby a further half head back in third.
Brown said the
daughter of Johannesburg had a bright future and suggested her
Flemington failure was best forgotten.
"That day she
ran her race beforehand," Brown noted. "She got fired up before the
race and was a spent force at the finish."
Sandton has an
enviable strike rate having won three of her six starts.

Brilliant Bel!
04/10/07 - Rob Slade
Belcentra
is certainly back to her best after blitzing her rivals at Moonee
Valley last Friday evening. It was one of the easiest wins you would
want to see with her sitting back smoking the pipe at the 600 metre
mark before cruising around the field and power away to win
untouched by 3 3/4 lengths.
The 3yo
daughter of Bel Esprit showed she was amongst the best 2yo’s in the
land running a very strong second to Camarilla in the Gr 3 Blue
Diamond Prelude in February earlier this year. This was
preceded by a slashing 4th in late January in the Listed Blue
Diamond Preview & in both events
she ran the best sectionals run by a 2yo in Victoria to that stage.
We headed confidently into the Inglis
Premier Race at Caulfield on 3rd March, however, just as the filly
was about to go past Incumbent (the winner) she chipped a joint,
ducked in & ran 6th.
That ended her 2yo year which was
unfortunate because had she not chipped the joint she would have
clearly won the Inglis Race & we believe the Sires the following
week (won by Incumbent).
Anyhow, we accepted that’s racing,
proceeded with the bone chip op & gave her a good spell accordingly.
On returning Johnny Walker recommended a new treatment for such
injuries that has been very successful in the USA called Irap.
This is a protein injection that assists in keeping heat &
inflammation out of the joint promoting soundness in the future.
One would have to say the treatment
has worked a treat. The real trick now is where to with
Belcentra? I have no doubt she is capable of going close in a
race such as the Thousand Guineas but she is not quite timed right &
there is the lack of an appropriate lead up race.
Should that prove unachievable Lee would target races such as the Gr
3 1200 Thoroughbred Club Stks at Caulfield 13th October, Listed 1400
Lexus Stks on Cup Day, & then the Gr 2 1600 Sandown Guineas on 17th
November as a logical path.
The Guineas is certainly tempting &
the only way to head there would be to run in a 1600 metre
race at Moonee Valley Friday night 12th October. That’s 1200 to 1600
then backing up 5 days later which is certainly not ideal.
The filly was also vaccinated with
the Ei injection early this week & they have a couple of quiet days
following making it hard for Lee to pour the required work into her.
Anyhow, Maestro Freedman has thrown a
few curve balls at me in recent times just when I thought I could
read him like a book…..so where will we end up?
